Drainage in Islington

Georgian and early Victorian drainage (1780s-1870s) in the older parts of the borough — some of London's oldest surviving residential drains. Victorian and Edwardian throughout most of the residential stock.

London Clay throughout. Islington has some of London's highest density of mature street trees, and the London Clay substrate makes root infiltration a major ongoing issue.

Common drainage issues include: Very old clay drain infrastructure — some pipes 150+ years old; Basement drain complexity in converted Georgian properties; Root infiltration from street trees in Victorian and Georgian residential streets; Grade II listed properties constraining drain access and repair options; Shared drainage in densely packed Georgian terraces; Scale and grease build-up in narrow Victorian pipe bores.

Recent case study in Islington

Basement Drain Backup Resolved in Islington Georgian Flat. Problem: A ground-floor and basement flat conversion in a Georgian terrace in Barnsbury, Islington, experienced repeated sewage backup into the basement utility room floor drain. Thames Water had attended twice and declared the public sewer to be clear. Solution: We conducted a CCTV survey starting from the basement floor drain and found a partial collapse of the private lateral drain at the junction with the shared section beneath the pavement, 4 metres from the property boundary. The collapsed section had reduced the effective bore to under 30mm. We carried out a patch-repair relining of the collapsed section, which restored the full 100mm bore. Result: No further sewage backup incidents. The patch repair was completed without any surface excavation on the public pavement.

What causes blocked drains in London?

The most common causes of blocked drains in London include: grease and fat build-up (fatbergs), root intrusion from London's many mature trees, collapsed or cracked Victorian clay pipes, flushed non-flushable items (wet wipes, cotton products), and ground movement from London Clay shrink-swell. London's Victorian drainage infrastructure is particularly susceptible to root infiltration and joint displacement.
